Questions for Steve DiMattia, President
You lead EVC Group’s public relations specialists?
Yes. I started to expand EVC Group’s public relations services from my living room — it was our first New York office — in 2005. We’ve grown since then and moved into real offices, but have always focused on creating PR results that have a meaningful impact on our clients’ businesses.
Are you focused solely on financial media?
Financial media relations is an important part of what we do. We also work across other media to communicate with our clients’ customers as well as their investors. We’ve worked on product launches (and product recalls!), advised clients on business and corporate transactions, and provided media and corporate training. We help our clients achieve results in their important trade press, local media and national business press as well, and every day we are doing more work helping our clients find new customers online.
Do you enjoy being a public relations specialist?
This is an exciting time to be engaged with growing companies. Traditional news outlets are in relative decline but remain influential, so they can’t be ignored. And many new tools for making companies more visible to customers and investors are emerging. We’ve done fantastic work with Twitter for several clients, and support active and popular corporate blogs. There is always a lot to do and plenty to learn, and we love bringing new ideas to our clients.
When did the PR bug bite you?
I started my career as a development director for a Catholic high school and was later a high school teacher. After working at Morgen-Walke Associates for a while I had the opportunity to participate in the launch of GMAC Mortgage’s HomeStretch Plan, a mortgage downpayment assistance program. It was very gratifying to see our work positively impact the general public, a feeling I also enjoy working with EVC Group’s many medical device clients.
You have always lived in New York City?
I grew up in the suburbs but my bildungsroman was in the Adirondacks, where I worked as a wilderness guide through college and still train wilderness guides in an outdoor leadership program every summer. I’ve also lived in Fort Lauderdale and Minneapolis, and as a student in Worcester, Massachusetts at the College of the Holy Cross, but have always found myself back in New York.
